Wag(g)ing War

A battle of epic proportions is currently under way here in Oly-ville, and I plan to do anything I can to win it. Even if it means getting dirty. Which is precisely what this whole war thing is about. Well, not about getting dirty, but rather getting clean.

You see, I am a dirty runner dog. I get dirty. I like to get dirty. I have to get me some dirty, and I get dirty any chance that I get. Sheesh, it clearly states in my URL that I am a dirty runner dog. He must not read this.

So whats the problem?

Where does the conflict come in?

Right here my friends!

See, lately my "pacer" has taken to combing me after I get my dirty on. It's somewhat more convenient (for him) than taking a bath or a shower after every run, but I for one am not too fond of it.

And I'm not going to take this laying down!!!

A hells to the NO I say, I'm fighting back, I mean it's a freaking horse brush for God's sake! Do I look like a horse? Okay, don't answer that question.

Since there seems to be no end in sight of this protocol, I must take matters into my own paws. And just like everything else I do, it's gonna get dirty! That's right, I'm gonna fight dirty. Whats the number one rule in fight club? Wrong. Number one rule in fight club is... Fight dirty!

(Insert evil laugh here) Bwhahahaha!

So how do I defend myself you ask?

See my "pacers" toes?

Gnarly looken huh? And I hear they are pretty sore too. Wink, wink. ;)

"Pacer" bruised them up pretty good at PsychoWyco on some rocks or roots or something. Anywho, so what I've been doing is... Every time he comes at me with that brush now, I do these wicked spin moves. Imagine one of those bucking bull things. I spin left, I spin right, I spin left again, for as long as it takes for him to give in. The best part is (and here is the dirty), every time I spin I STOMP on his toes.

Bwhahaha!

Dude is reduced to crying like an itty bitty baby.

Uhhhg, what a wimp. Hahahaha!

I must be winning this war cause after today's run, "pacer" told me to go take a swim in the lake to clean off. Hopefully the lake stays clear of the ice for a while, otherwise I may have to resort to other methods of avoiding the brush.

Ohhh yeah, I gots a plan B. Just between you and me (keep it on the DL), I got some intel that one of pacers new shirts makes his nipples sore.

I might have to tweak him!

Hahahaha!

Were In...

Hello my bitches!

Eeeeasy. Eeeeasy! That's just a joke, the only "bitch" around here is my "pacer". Hahahaha!

Okay, so it's been pretty much an easy week around here. I've been riding a high all week ever since getting back from PsycoWyco, and my pacer has pulled back on the reins a bit. We've been running most days since we've been back, but they have been held to an hour or so and... darn it... I'm so stoked at how well things went there that I just don't want to hold back.

I wants to GET IT ON! I NEED to get it ON!

Although I understand my "pacers" approach at taking a recovery week after the race. I had to give him a mocking wrinkle face a couple of times. Know why? Cause he's weak, and I gots to get IT ON!

Even had to blow by him a couple of times, just to send the message... Yep, you guessed it. I- NEED- TO- GET- IT- ON!

So, I'm gonna GET IT ON at the Rockin K trail marathon on April the fourth of 2009!

I am so stoked my friends! Seriously, we got back from PsychoWyco which was truly just a proving ground of how I would deal with crowds, and to test my longer race paced efforts and I felt golden. Not like a Golden Retriever (they have too much hair for my taste), but I mean I feel freak'n awesome!

So I had to find a race that my "pacer" and I could go and do before my running season closes out. By "closing out", I mean it will get too hot to race pretty soon, so time is of the essence and I want to race a race, not just run it.

I WANT TO... saaay it with me!!! GET IT ON!!

And we found that race in the Rockin K 26.3 mile off-road trail marathon. Lucky we found it when we did cause the race filled up and closed out the day we got signed up. Anywho.

So I spent some time this week e-mailing back and forth with one of the race directors. A super cool gal by the name of Stacy, who... made me fill out a registration form of my own, and I had to sign the waiver even. We also had to make a few concessions to gain entrance (due to a previous dogs antics in the aid stations), but all is good, and we are more than happy to comply with the stipulations because she gave us assurance that both "pacer" and I would be in the race. Meaning, I WILL be a legitimate runner in the race.

Meaning... You guessed it.

I GET TO GET IT ON!

GOT TO GET IT ON!

No choice but to GET IT ON!

IT IS ON!

PsychoWyco Race Report

So Saturday we (myself, my "pacer", Kona (my runner pal) and her "pacer) rolled down to Kansas for the PsychoWyco "Run Toto Run" 20 mile trail race. Nice that they have a dog included in the name, but I'm think'en Toto ain't got nothing on me. Maybe they should change the name to "run Oly Run". Bwahahaha! Of course I say this in jest, and am grateful that they allow the better species to show them up. I mean really, we all know that four paws are better than two. Right?

Please PsychoWyco Ben and peeps, (if you read this)
I'm just kidding. You guys put on a first rate race and we look forward to coming back. Seriously my pacer was impressed at the organization of this race and it's venue as well. Well done!

Race morning came early at 5:30. We got up, had some breakfast and then my "pacer" took both Kona and I into this traveling box thing, it goes up and down, so we could go out and spread some morning dew.

After that we headed to the race...

It was a cool sunny morning around 20 something degrees, perfect for me and Kona to run in I thought. We hit the packet pick up and got our race numbers. We also got to see "Uncle Greg" and our friend Bob there too. I'm not really sure who they were pacing, cause I didn't see any dogs with them, but anywho...

The course is set up in ten mile loops, with three races going on simultaneously. A Ten mile, Twenty mile and Thirty mile. Kona was signed up for the Ten mile race, I was signed up for the Twenty. After some discussions with Kona the night before I agreed to run the first Ten mile loop with her, and then my "pacer" and I would go and do our second loop hard. We also decided to start from the back, stay out of the crowd and work our way through the field, giving us some time to settle into the whole event. Good thing we had already planed that out, cause my pacer wasn't even ready to go when the field took off. I guess I got a little bit excited and jumped up on him and ripped the bib # off of him. So with like three paw coverers on each of his upper paws, he was trying to re-attach his bib number at the start of the race. Took him a bit to get that done. Which meant that we in-fact started, dead last. No worries, we got game!

At the start of the race is about a quarter mile of open ground before you hit wooded and hilly single track. We took off and started passing humans left and right. Even on the single track we were able to make quite a few passes despite the rock and brush and uneven terrain. That, we are used to, the masses and trying to get around them were the most limiting factor in our progress. But Kona and our "pacers" kept moving forward through the crowd. Kona was doing awesome!

Here she is, on the move in one of the wider trail sections. Looking Awesome!

Here's the four of us in the same spot. Unfortunately Kona's "pacer" went a bit lame in one of her lower paws from an old injury and wasn't feeling too spry at the moment, but she soldiered on.

We saw "Uncle" Greg out on the course and gave him a hard time about his Jane Fonda head band thing. Hahahah!!! Let's get physical Uncle Greg! Hahahaha!!! But he looks great and happy to be racing so we'll forgive his wardrobe faux paws. Hahaha! Get it?

Then we came up on one of the several water crossings. As you can clearly see, I'm tracking at this point. See that chick human ahead of me? She was pacing two dogs! My dad says those are crochet mittens, but I don't believe him. They look like miniature yellow poodles to me. And she's carrying them! They aren't even running! Either way, props to the gal, she did a great job of running and we kind of stuck in that group with her till the end of the first Ten mile lap, where we had to say goodbye to Kona and her "pacer".

While we enjoyed our first lap with Koni for all the spirit in which it was intended, it was now time to open it up a little bit and let things FLY! It was time to get our RACE on! "Pacer" shed his vest and even left our water bottle behind it was time to go light and fast. With all the Ten milers out of the way the course opened up quite a bit and we were able to run. We smoked across the open field and hit the single track, made much muddier now because of all the previous traffic. It wasn't frozen ground any more, but rather slippery and at points it felt like we were doing the electric slide or even the moon walk. Thirst was quenched by streams, and there was no playing see-saw with other runners. We just passed. We owned this trail and it seemed that everyone that we came up on knew that too. Being gracious to this fact, every runner that we came upon gave us the right of way, by sliding (literally) off to the side of the trail to let us pass. Being thankful, in return we said "thanks" or "good job" or some affirming remark to all that we passed on the trail. This is one of the great things about trail running that you don't find in many sports, respect and compassion for others out towing the line no matter what your given ability. I for one, love it! And this is why we do this sport!

I love running with my "pacer", we know each other well. When things get technical, I slide in behind him and let him lead the way. When things widen up, I move to the front and pull. We work well in tandem, as a sole unit, and can even work on paw signs. We did run into one problem and that was food. I normally will eat GU (a high energy, glucose, fructose gel) but it just didn't sound good to me on the day. I do loves me the Cheez-its, and "pacer" tried to do the hand off, but at race pace and dealing with the small size of the food objects proved to be an issue. So we had to improvise.

This pic is of me and "pacer" rolling into the aid station at mile eighteen. He was a bit worried about my fuel intake at this point. We only had two miles to go but he wanted to get some food in me, so he grabbed a PBnJ sammy (my second of the race) and I wolfed it right down. I think he took note and that will be in our future nutritional race plans.

Here we are leaving the last aid station at mile eighteen. Yep, we passed everyone that you see in front of us.

Yep, that's me with my medal. We got the race done. We had a super smoken second lap split and even managed to (if we had been included in the official results) take fourth overall in the mens and fifth overall in the twenty mile race. Whatever! It was great hanging out with Kona and Her "pacer", and seeing Uncle Greg too. Ohh, I need to give him a big shout out for having an awesome race! He set a new course PR for himself. Way to go brutha! Saahweeeet race! And Kate as well, sorry about that foot thing. Thanks for running with me.

This race was so much fun, but it didn't even tax me. "Pacer" tried to take a few post race photos, but I saw me some ducks and had to go chase em... With my medal on no doubt. Click that pic, it's even more awesome!

More to come.

My Lackey "pacer" Is...

Packing my gear while I taper.

Yep, it's race week and I've been tapering. This being my first race, I'm not used to the whole taper thing. I've been trying very hard to keep my energetic tendencies in check but have had a digression or two, as you can see below.

Whooops! :)

Back to the lackey "pacer": He's packing my race bags right now. Uhgg!! I loves me some cheez-its, and the gu is pretty good too... I'm just not sure what the peanut butter is for... Hmmmm.

Back to the packing action, pacer is packing clothes for himself. I don't get it!? What a wuss. I mean, I don't wear anything at all and he's got all this stuff laid out for himself. And if you ask me... he doesn't even know how to wear what he's got, much less pick and choose how to not wear stuff the right way. For example, pacer came home the other day with these fancy new paw cover'ers and he threw them on and we went for a run. The run was just ok, but what was funny was that when we got home he took his cover'ers cover off. And what did I see? An "R" and an "L" on dudes paw cover'ers. DUDE had em on the wrong paws! Even I know the difference between my left and right paws.

What a dork! which of these pics looks correct to you?

I'm sure you'll chose the same as I, my pacer chose the other. Uhhg!! Lets just hope I can keep him under control this weekend at the race. If I can do that, it's gonna be great weekend. I'll get to see Koni, my favorite runner princess and uncle Greg too. Love that dude, he's Hanks dad.

Have a great race Kona!!! You too uncle Greg!

Okay peeps, taper week is just about over. Thank all the bones... Let's get this thing on!!!

Race report to follow.

Let Me Introduce Myself

Hi, my name is Oly. Yep, that's a picture of me up there from when I was just a pup. I was pretty cute huh? Anyway, I'm a pure bred yellow Labrador retriever and I love to run. Funny considering how I was when I was younger.

You see, I was the runt of the litter and the last of my puppy brothers and sisters to get taken home. I was shy and timid, in fact so much so that at one time I couldn't even be on a leash, much less go for a walk. The slightest thing would stop me in my tracks. Like a leaf blowing across the lawn or the sound of a car coming down the street, uhgg. My pacer was very concerned about all this because, well, he needed me to pace him. So we started off slow, walking half a block, then a full block and eventually all the way around the block.

Next we bumped it up to running. This proved more difficult because I was still shy and timid and my pacer even called me a "scaredy cat" a time or two. Which is a bunch of BS, because I'm a dog, and I'm not afraid of any cats either. I like to chase cats! I digressed. Anywho, we worked our way up slowly on the running as well. My pacer in an effort to keep me focused on running would hold a dog treat in front of my face to distract me from the outside world. This worked like a charm, cause I loves me some treats! Treats, Treats, Treats! Once I got the hang of the running thing I was hooked. I wanted to go every day. I wanted to go longer every day. I'm like the energizer bunny when it comes to running. Wait! Check that, I'd like to eat the energizer bunny while I'm running. Hmmm, I may have to dream about that tonight...

Anyway, I started taking my pacer out to the lake to run on the trails. Which is a blast except for the fact that my pacer always ran on the concrete path, which is not nearly as fun as running in the grass next to the path, because you can smell all the dirty birds there and all the bad little bunnies. So to have my way I had to retrain my pacer by pulling on the leash, to get it through his thick skull that we should be running over here! It worked. Maybe he's not that slow after all. I'm sure we'll find out in time.

Long story short, once I got him into the grass and dirt we never looked back. Well, sometimes I have to, to make sure he's still with me, but now we almost always run off road trails. And were actually getting pretty good at it too. I don't even have to be on a leash any more, which makes it much easier for both of us to get all dirty. By the way, were even going to go do our first race next week. Yep, a real race, a 20 miler to be exact. I get my own bib number, I get my own finishers time right in there with the humans on the results page, and my own finishers medal. Sweet huh?!

So this blog is going to be about me and my running adventures and thoughts. Not my pacer's. You wouldn't want to hear his anyways. Truth be told, sometimes when we run up a hill I can hear that pea roll to the back of his head. Hahaha!

Okay, stay tuned kiddies, it's a taper week and you never know what's gonna go down. Now I gotta go outside and pee on something.

Later!

P.s. Bark at me in the comments.

P.s.s Send me a pic if you want to be included in my dog pound on the side bar.
